Gibbon blames the decline of the classical tradition as embodied in the Roman Empire on the rise of Christianity and the suppression of ‘pagan’ learning.

Two dates stand out:-

389 AD – The destruction of the library of Alexandria ordered by Archbishop Theophilus

529 AD – The abolition of Greek schools of philosophy ordered by Emperor Justinian
