Time to revive some old terminology?

April 1, 2010

Arguably, the intellectual division C.P. Snow bemoaned a half century ago had its origin in 1831 with the founding of the British Association for the Advancement of Science. Active professionals based in the industrial cities of the north displaced gentlemen amateurs whose natural home was the Royal Society in London. Annual meetings were held in provincial cities in deliberate preference to London. At the third meeting in 1833, “the word scientist was used for the first time instead of natural philosopher“.
