“Spiritual” is a meaningless word. When people talk or write of “the human spirit” they are usually referring to human resilience and resourcefulness. This is understandable in human terms; no resort to the supernatural is required. But what on earth does “spiritual” mean when people use the word. Are they talking of the ability of humans to create and appreciate the various arts? Are they talking of human contemplative capacities? Or are they denying a so-called material account of human experience? There’s usually no way of knowing in what sense the word is used and that is why it has no value in human discourse.
